Special Events | Salmon Leave Home

Salmon Come Home is an annual environmental fair, and is designed to promote public awareness about the spawning salmon that migrate back to Coquitlam. Every year coho and chum salmon migrate back to Hoy and Scott Creeks, following an arduous journey from the Pacific Ocean so that they can spawn and complete their life cycle.

Several groups and corporations participated in this year’s event. There were interactive displays, refreshments, food, and of course the spawning salmon to see. Pinetree secondary students demonstrated a salmon disection. Salmon cycle demonstrations were put on by Chris Hamming, Nature walks by Elaine Golds. Representatives from the DFO provided public salmon demonstrations in Hoy Creek.  City of Coquitlam personnel, along with local conservation groups were on hand to provide information about watershed ecology, and environmental preservation.

Migrating Salmon swim up from the Coquitlam River, then into Scott and Hoy Creeks.  Not before having swum from the Pacific Ocean, and Fraser River.

This year’s Salmon Come Home event seemed encouraging for the dedicated volunteers. Close to two thousand visitors attended Salmon Come Home, and we are certainly looking forward to the next event, The Fry release.  The Fry release will be held on sunday May 6th 2007. Next year the Salmon Come Home festival will be held on October 28, 2007.
