Salmon Leave Home
The Hoy/Scott Creek Watershed Society is hosting its annual Salmon Leave Home event on Sunday, May 3rd 2009 at 11:00 a.m. to 3 a.m. at the Hoy Creek Hatchery. This event provides an opportunity for families to release young salmon fry into Hoy Creek where they will start their long journey to the Pacific Ocean.
Participants will be releasing young Coho salmon that have been raised from the egg stage at the Hatchery. Once released into the creek, these young salmon will have a treacherous journey to the Ocean where they will live for several years before returning to the creek. The return of the salmon is celebrated each fall during the annual Salmon Come Home event.
The Hatchery is located west of Pinetree Community Centre off of Princess Crescent. Parking is prohibited on Princess Crescent, but participants can park either at Coquitlam City Hall or Douglas College and walk to the Hatchery via the Hoy Creek Trail . Donations will be accepted in support of the stewardship activities of the Hoy/Scott Creek Watershed Society and the event will continue until all salmon have been released.
The Hoy/Scott Watershed Society is also seeking new members and volunteers of all ages to participate in hatchery activities, tree planting, invasive plant removal, monthly meetings, special events and other Society activities. Monthly meetings are held at Pinetree Community Centre, every third wendsday of every month. All interested volunteers are welcome.
For more information, please call the Hatchery at 604-927-6536 .
